Oregon Photography Book Wins Award

NATJA, the North American Travel Journalists Association, just announced the results of their 2016 travel media awards competition. I’m very happy to share that my newest book, Oregon, A Photographic Journey, won Gold in the Travel Book/Guide category. In addition to the Gold award, I earned a Silver in the Landscape Photography category for a photo of Smith Rock State Park in Oregon that was published in VIA Magazine, and was cited as a Finalist in the Travel Guide category [read more …]

Topaz DeNoise 6

Topaz Labs just released a pretty major upgrade to their already excellent digital noise reduction software, DeNoise. There several new features in DeNoise 6, which you can read about on the Topaz Labs website. What caught my eye right away is that they have added presets for specific camera and ISO combinations. I jumped on that and gave it a test with this photo: On a visit to Cusco, Peru, I wandered the cobblestone streets of the popular San Blas neighborhood one [read more …]

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

I recently posted this photo on my Facebook page and one of the initial comments was from a photographer wanting to know the location because he was surprised that there were no ATV tracks in my photo. The federally-designated Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for many miles along the central Oregon coast. Many visitors just make a brief stop at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area a little south of Florence. Or they may visit several state and county [read more …]

Favorite Photos of 2015

Looking over the photos we’ve made in the past year is always an interesting and informative exercise. Time to reflect on places we went, what we observed, and what we experienced. Here are 15 of my favorite photographs from 2015. Quite a few people in Eugene, Oregon, celebrate the arrival of a new year with a hike to the summit of Mount Pisgah. The Jed Kesey Memorial sculpture at the top of the mountain is designed so that the sun lines [read more …]

Stuff that works: Topaz Adjust photo editing plugin

Topaz Labs, makers of photo editing software for Lightroom and Photoshop, announced a few days ago that they’re running a special on the newest version of their Adjust plugin. I’m a fan of plugins in general, and have found other Topaz products to be pretty cool, so I downloaded Adjust and have been exploring and testing. Here are some examples of what the plugin can do, using a photo of an old church from my recent visit to San Blas [read more …]

Thank you for your time

Google+ recently sent me a Notification that a person named Margarita had added me to her Circles. I clicked on the link, which took me to the profile of someone I’ve never met, in person or online, someone who posts their photos on G+. Looking at what they’ve posted so far, images typical of a not-very-advanced amateur nature photographer, I’m not likely to click “+”, Favorite on Flickr or “Like” on FB, or gush over in Comments when I view their [read more …]
