50th Anniversary of the Oregon Beach Bill

June 7, 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Oregon Beach Bill, which forever guarantees the public’s right to access and passage on all beaches along the Oregon Coast. Earlier law had set the extent of the public land at the high tide line, but the Beach Bill made it so that public land extended to the vegetation line. After a childhood in California and many years as a resident of Hawaii, both states which also have [read more …]

NATJA, the North American Travel Journalists Association, just announced the results of their 2016 travel media awards competition. I’m very happy to share that my newest book, Oregon, A Photographic Journey, won Gold in the Travel Book/Guide category. In addition to the Gold award, I earned a Silver in the Landscape Photography category for a photo of Smith Rock State Park in Oregon that was published in VIA Magazine, and was cited as a Finalist in the Travel Guide category [read more …]

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

2016’s run around the sun turned out to be pretty darn nice for this traveler. Many thanks to all the friends, family, clients, newly met folks, and complete strangers who made it so. I’ve got a huge backlog of images to process from this year’s travels in Oregon, California, Montana, Wyoming, Trinidad & Tobago, and Hawaii. A long overdue return visit to the Big Island and the opportunity to once again witness a live lava flow was a fantastic way [read more …]

Favorite Photos of 2015

Looking over the photos we’ve made in the past year is always an interesting and informative exercise. Time to reflect on places we went, what we observed, and what we experienced. Here are 15 of my favorite photographs from 2015. Quite a few people in Eugene, Oregon, celebrate the arrival of a new year with a hike to the summit of Mount Pisgah. The Jed Kesey Memorial sculpture at the top of the mountain is designed so that the sun lines [read more …]

Shoot It Now

Last week I went to the southern Oregon coast to photograph the giant waves crashing on the rocks at Shore Acres State Park. Driving through Sunset Bay State Park, I pulled into the viewpoint for Cape Arago Lighthouse and I was reminded of why it’s always important to stop and photograph what you see and not just think “Oh, I’ll come back another time for that photo”. I’m sure glad I made this photograph when I did several years ago, [read more …]

Stuff that works: Topaz Adjust photo editing plugin

Topaz Labs, makers of photo editing software for Lightroom and Photoshop, announced a few days ago that they’re running a special on the newest version of their Adjust plugin. I’m a fan of plugins in general, and have found other Topaz products to be pretty cool, so I downloaded Adjust and have been exploring and testing. Here are some examples of what the plugin can do, using a photo of an old church from my recent visit to San Blas [read more …]

Prepping for Peru

It’s genetic, I’m sure. Not only did I inherit a love of travel from my parents, but I’m sure I got my penchant for planning from my mom as well. On family vacations, we had a daily itinerary with details of each stop determined long before we all piled into the station wagon. My sister inherited it, too. She’s heading to Greece this spring, and already she’s devoured multiple guidebooks, checked out numerous DVDs from the library, spent hours checking [read more …]

Red Rock Balloon Rally

The annual Red Rock Balloon Rally is the second largest balloon rally in the world, surpassed only by the much more famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This rally has been held every year since 1981, and this year’s event, December 6-8, 2013, is expected to draw over 200 hot air balloons to Red Rock Park just outside of Gallup, New Mexico.
